The Life We Are Given (Inner Work Book) by George Leonard and Michael Murphy This is truly one of the best books on Yoga, Meditation, Healthy Eating, and Exercise. There are other good books that deal with each of these, but not one that puts it altogether in one book before. The authors, who are both past presidents of the world renowned Esalen Institute in Big Sur, CA have put together a practice that combines the best of East and West and make it accessible to busy working people. Yoga: The Spirit and Practice of Moving into Stillness by Erich Schiffmann This book not only does a great job with asanas, which are the most popular aspect of Yoga in the west today, but also goes in depth with meditation, breathing, and spirituality. It is also available online for free here. The video “Yoga Mind and Body” with Ali McGraw is a companion to the book and shows many of the poses from the book in motion. Stretching: 20th Anniversary By Bob Anderson If Yoga Asanas and/or Martial Arts are too exotic for you, then I can recommend this book to help you stay fit and flexible. Flexibility is the fountain of youth. Creative Visualization: Use the Power of Your Imagination to Create What You Want in Your Life By Shakti Gawain This is great book to learn about affirmations and meditation and will help you to create own your reality. I also recommend all of Shakti Gawain’s other books including "Living in the Light" and " Creating true Prosperity." Ageless Body, Timeless Mind: The Quantum Alternative to Growing Old By Deepak Chopra In this book Deepak combines knowledge from his upbringing in India’s Ayurvedic tradition with his education as a medical doctor and quantum physics. We are only as old as we think and believe that we are. I also recommend “Quantum Healing” and “The Chopra Center Cookbook." The Power of Intention by Wayne W. Dyer His material deserves a place in the library of anyone who is involved in creating their own reality. Dr. Dean Ornish's Program for Reversing Heart Disease: By Dean Ornish Dr. Ornish was instrumental in the genesis of “The Life We Are Given” at the Esalen Institute listed above. Like Deepak Chopra, his philosophies combine the best from the west with the best from the east. I also recommend his books "Eat More, Weigh Less" , "Stress, Diet and your Heart", and "Everyday Cooking." Meditation for Dummies By Stephan Bodian, Dean Ornish Mediation is a tool for controlling the mind; specifically the clutter and confusion of the mind. An ancient sage once said that controlling the current of the mind is like holding the wind in your hand. Mediation can help you be calm and centered in even the most stressful situations. This book is co-authored by Dean Ornish and is recommend by Deepak Chopra. Opening to Dying and Grieving: A Sacred Journey by Ron Valle and Mary Mohs Ron and Mary of “The Awakening Retreat Center” wrote this book. They are Yogi psychologists. I recommend this book to anyone dealing with the emotional issues surrounding death. Be Here Now By Ram Dass This book is written by a man originally known as Richard Alpert ,who was a Harvard University professor. He went to India, met his guru, Neem Karoli Baba, and became one of the earliest and best known American yogis. This book should be in the library of anyone interested in eastern philosophy or who is on a spiritual path. Aikido in Everyday Life: Giving In to Get Your Way By Terry Dobson, Victor Miller Sensei Scott Berg says that the martial art, Aikido, is a physical manifestation of a philosophy. The philosophy is non-violence and harmony with all people and the universe. This book uses the ideas of Aikido to help the average non-martial artist deal with conflict in a peaceful way. Somatics: Reawakening the Mind's Control of Movement, Flexibility, and Health By Thomas Hanna The first half of the book explains why different kinds of stress cause muscle tension and the second half of the book shows simple do it yourself movements, that done regularly, will make you feel years younger, improve posture, and give you more energy. You can also acquire audio versions of the exercises at the Novato Institute for Somatic Research and Training Founded by Thomas Hanna. What the Bleep!? - Down the Rabbit Hole Directed by William Arntz, Betsy Chasse, Mark Vicente This movie is all about the overlap between modern quantum physics and ancient philosophy and spirituality. |
